First Up: proper support for 'accientals'.

N3: The MonoNote & PolyNote mappings only allowed you to program the 7 'scalar' tones per octave, based on the scale set for the sequencer. The PolyNote mapping didn't even display certain notes at all.

N4: Allows access to non-scalar tones by holding down one button (to pick the 'base pitch"), then a button above or below to 'bend' the note up or down one semitone. For instance, when in "Rack Edit" mode, to get a minor 2nd (m2), hold down a button on the bottom row, then push the button in the same column one row up. Also, vice-versa works: hold a button on row 2, push the button in the same column on row 1. For a tritone, hold a button on the 4th row from the bottom, and push a button one row up.

To visually indicate accidentals, those notes are displayed with the LED at 'green low' -- normal pitches are 'green high'. Actually, for consistency, certain intervals are now always displayed 'green low': m2, m3, tt, m6, m7 -- i.e. 'the black keys'.

I'm now going to go off to test it thoroughly by playing lots of basslines with tritones... ;)

Cheers,
Jim

Hi all!

Hi all!

I have had N3 for couple of weeks and I must say I am SO impressed! Where has this great app been hiding from me all these years ;) Workflow is just amazing and N3 gives you so much creative power. And app seems to be very stable. Maybe the biggest surprise for me was this ReWire syncronization with Logic. In fact I never had tried ReWire before. Works perfect without any tweaking...

Now, my number one wish to make it perfect for my compositional demands:
Standard Midi File player module. Simple as that, just play. Editing can be done elsewhere, I have for example Logic for that. What's point? I would really like N3 also play more complex and longer patterns (like for example 32 bars bass line or piano part etc.). But what would be difference, I would like to make those SMF-patterns to be like shorter ones: looping them Live and then choosing another 32-x bars SMF-pattern etc. And then of course I could run all those normal 8-128 steps patterns alongside these SMF-stuff. This kind of complex Live-arrangement cannot be done with Logic. What do you think?

...and I cannot help adding my second wish: Numerology for iOS. This would really be winner. I have few seqs there in my iPad but N3 beats all of them easily. Although Genome is quite promising but yet quite far from perfect...

Greetings from Finland,

Hi Everyone,

In case anyone on this forum lives in Barcelona, Spain (or close by), tomorrow we're putting on an evening of improvised electronic music (stylized towards the experimental & super IDM) at Niu (http://www.niubcn.com). We will have performances by D-Fried (SP), Pauk (SP), Ralp (SP) and myself (I'll be using a Numerology & Live setup).

Along with the live performances, we will also conduct a Q+A at the end with the performers to try to capture a glimpse of the humans behind the machines. The night will be hosted by Antònia Folguera and will cost 4€ (including one beer/soft drink) (but if anyone on this forum will be going, get in touch and I can put you the guest list).

Despite promising myself I would only work (for a while) on finishing 'mostly implemented' features for N4, I did dive into a bit of programming on a recent acquisition: the Livid Ohm RBG Slim. I was able to get a good chunk of N4's "grid mapping" (a.k.a. the Launchpad mapping) to work with the Ohm RBG pretty quickly -- mostly it just needs an "edit mode menu".

For those of you with a Push on order (myself included), this bodes well for Push support -- assuming no nasty surprises in the Push's MIDI spec...

Cheers,

This is a new abstract or synthetic ambiance piece.

I used Giorgio Sancristoforo's Berna I with Numerology generating about 20 streams of CCs to create the base material; then Sancristoforo's Gleetchlab to toss and spice the segments up a bit and then his Variations to try to hang it all together. (These are all Max/MSP apps for Mac only, unfortunately.)

As the note says, headphones seem to improve the experience a bit; the panning behaviour is a feature of Variations and you can pick a couple of surround options in addition to the 2 speaker stereo configuration.
I started using aux sends last night not used before only in line processing,
I modulating the send level to have it send at a particular point in the arrangement, I noticed a noise was introduced every time the aux level was sending and would remain or not its kind of random to a degree, so I bypassed all the the fx and the noise was still there again random, led bar readout for the aux stack is also lit up to around the 50% mark most of the time even when nothing is being sent, the aux ends on the aux stack are all off so no fx loop, I'm scratching my head head... no input send no fx loops but still random noise... what am I missing? any advice would be appreciated.

Numerology 3.2 Build 69

A general note: If you are using Ableton Live 9 w/ the Launchpad, see the forum at five12.net for setup tips.

- Supports the Launchpad S (see notes for build 67 if you have 2 or more Launchpads connected).
- Fixes a problem with Numerology picking AirPlay as the default audio output.
- Fixes a pitch problem with the Launchpad and PolyNote Seq in "RT Rec" mode.
- Fixes a problem with the N3 VST and Launchpad in Ableton Live when MIDI output is muted for more than 3 seconds.

- Before saving an existing project file (.nmp), Numerology will create a backup copy of the previous file (in <projname>.media/AutoSave). If there are any issues saving the project, you can (manually) recover the previously saved version.

- There is a new hidden pref, KeepAutosaveFiles. If it is set, Numerology will keep backup copies of all saved project files (.nmp) in the .media/AutoSave dir. Please keep in mind that though most project files are small, if you save a lot of them, they will slowly consume more and more disk space. You can always safely delete them, of course. To set the pref, copy the following command into /Applications/Utilities/Terminal:

defaults write com.five12.Numerology3 KeepAutosaveFiles YES

to unset it:

defaults write com.five12.Numerology3 KeepAutosaveFiles NO

- The internal note range limiter in the MonoNote has been tweaked to allow note number 0 (before the minimum was 1).
- Fixed a problem when displaying very low note numbers.

(build 68 was an unreleased build)

I was stuck at a Starbucks for a few hours last week and was able to get a decent proof-of-concept going. I know some of you have really been waiting for this so I thought I should post a few notes:

- Pro only at first.
- Semi-unlimited Undo & Redo -- it will depend on RAM use, but I'm expecting at least 100 levels. Probably you'll get more in 64-bit mode...
- Most 'edit ops' will be included, but not all: Set params & properties, add/move/delete module, etc. A few items, like "delete stack" probably not be undo-able at first.
- There will be a 'History Stack' with descriptive names: "Stack-1, MonoNote-1, Undo Set Gate 5 to 0.5", etc. -- Just like Photoshop! :)

Right now N4 can undo & redo some parameter changes from the UI -- should be easy to add all params, but some of the bigger ops will take longer (module stuff).

More on N4 soon...

Cheers,

Quick update on N3: I'm prepping a new 3.2 build, barring unexpected delays, it should be out tomorrow...

The Browser:

This is perhaps the biggest UI / usability change for Numerology 4, as it improves workflow in many ways. However, it has also been very time consuming to finish, as I'm working to get all the details right. It replaces the "Module Lib", the Stack Library, the Module Presets window and the AU preset dialogs with 5 tabbed outlines, one each for Modules, Stacks, Audio Files, MIDI Files and a general "Files" tab. (see images at the bottom of this post)

Modules:

The Modules browser provides access to both Factory Modules (pretty much as before) and User Modules. The User Modules area is now in ~/Music/Five12/Modules for easy access (now that Apple hides your "Library" folder...), and is where all module presets are now stored. The browser doesn't allow you to create directories (yet), but you can create them in the Finder and they will show up in the browser. You can even specify a custom sorting (via a text file) -- that's how I get the Factory Modules to sort like they do in N3. Everything in the modules browser is a module preset file -- even the Factory Modules. You can drag module presets directly from the browser outline to a stack to add the module, or on top of a compatible module to load those settings into the module. This means you can very easily build a custom module library and actually use it as a full-time replacement for the factory modules.

All modules --the actual modules in a project-- now have a "floppy disk" icon in the module 'header'. When you push it, the browser 'focuses' on that module by showing only the presets available for that module. You can drag the floppy disk to the browser to save a preset, or to the Finder to export one. There's also an auto-load button so you can quickly flip through a series of presets.

AU Presets are also handled through the modules browser -- they'll work much like module preset files, but will be .aupreset files for for AU modules.

Stacks:

As with module presets, stacks now live in your Music directory (~/Music/Five12/Stacks). You can import them by dragging from the browser to your project. Currently export is still handled the same as before, but I'm planning to tweak it a bit. The browser has a preview panel for all file types, and for Stacks it shows the same info that is available in the N3 stack browser.

Audio & MIDI Files:

These are for file-type specific browsing of ~/Music/Five12/Audio and ~/Music/Five12/MIDI. The preview panel for audio files includes a waveform display and playback controls -- and hopefully also an 'alt output' routing option. Of course, you can create Finder 'shortcuts' and add them to those folders to allow browsing of your Audio and/or MIDI Files where-ever they live now.

I'm hoping to get in a 'focus' and 'autoload' function for browsing Audio files: drag the first files into the Samples Synth or Drum Kit modules, set 'autoload', then just use the cursor keys to load samples in quick succession.

Files:

I'm still working out the details, but this will probably list your home folder, a 'favorites' folder, and all disks -- basically anything that isn't already covered by the other stuff.
