Default Current Step-Value Modulation Target

Hi,

Currently in the Note and CV sequencers it's possible to right-click and MIDI Learn an explicit step-value in a parameter lane, or to target one with modulation. What I really miss is a dynamic, current step-value target rather than an explicit one, e.g. what you're able to do with RT note input on a Note Sequencer, or parameter locks with an Elektron box, but for non-note parameters like Note Seq Gate, Mutes and CV lanes, and the ModulationSeq.

As a way to mitigate flooding ParamMod target menus maybe this could be as simple as adding an option in the Advanced Parameter section of Note and CV sequencers, e.g. a combo box: Seq Mod Targets [Indexed, Realtime].

Apologies if there's some way to do this already, I've not been able to find it.

Cheers,
Nate

hi,

did you look into RTA (Real Time Automation)?
that might be what you're looking for.

Sure, I'm familiar with RTA. There are two significant differences between this and RTA and they have to do with data handling and modulation targets.

In RTA the automation data is discrete to the sequencers, living in a separate/invisible cubby. What I would like is to actually record over existing parameter lane data (like MonoNote/Gate etc.) as the transport plays, rather than create a new layer of data atop of it.

Regardless of whether we're talking about RTA or MIDI Learn there's currently (afaik) no way to target the playing step of a sequencer's parameter lane, besides note. If you want to modulate 16 steps of gate you need 16 modulation sources (1:1) mapped explicitly per-step. That's useful when you need precise control but it's very cumbersome when you just want to perform a parameter on the fly. So we need a new, dynamic, modulation target for each sequencer parameter lane (current step value) to facilitate this.

IMHO this method would be much easier to use and more capable than RTA, as it would operate using the basic MIDI Learn/sequencer paradigm and allow for real time-based performance over sequencer params.

little bump

To avoid plunging the works to much one could imagine this simply as a feature add to the ModulationSeq.
A new knob and button for live inputting step values, where the knob is value entry and the button is a clutch.

Something like this:
