Default Numerology with an analog heart

Decided to see if it'd be fun to clock Numerology from my modular. The results are pretty cool considering it only required a square-wave LFO, Envelope Follower & a Binary Op to derive a clean gate signal. No DC-coupled interface, CV-input recovery or Silent Way necessary. Neat.

I put the results up on soundcloud... One analog voice. One AU voice. Both clocked from the same LFO. I send the LFO into audio-rate twice.

A more musical example. MonoNotes getting Evolved. Silent Way back out to synths completes the circle.

great work baltimoroder,
have you tried to use more than one CV2Audio module with the audio mixer and the audio delay ? you can get some interesant result.
every time that i open numerology and feed his out in my modular i catch new idea and inspiration.

Cool!

Lots of ways to have N3 + real modular fun now!

"…it only required a square-wave LFO, Envelope Follower & a Binary Op"

Hi Baltimoroder, to clock Numerology from an extern modular is a very interesting thing. I would like to do that. But please explain it a bit more detailed for me, I did only understand that you sent a LFO from the modular into your Audio interface. And than? Envelope Follower Module? … … Binary Op? … … And how you tell Numerology to sync to that?
Thanks for your reply. Cheers, loopspool

Talking

@baltimoroder :

i've try the same but i've used the UnaryOp with Logical Negation
here attached is the simple stack that i've used.
i'm really curios to see you project if is possible

@loopspool

i'm not sure but i think that baltimoroder sync Num with the modular clock using a sequencer , dont' mind what, with the Play Mode set to Cv Tirg:Step

I'm very excited by the interaction within Numerology and modular synth

@amsonix: I don't think your file got uploaded.
@loopspool: The patch is basically this...

In the Modular...

Square wave LFO* around a 10% duty cycle**
Attenuation as necessary (I run through a Model 9 which gives me attenuation and an on/off switch for "run"), then to audio interface.

Then in Numerology...

Audio In module, separate out L/R as necessary (Using Pan/Volume module)
|
Envelope Follower. Shortest attack/decay time.
|
Binary Op. 1st input is the CV from Envelope Follower. The 2nd condition is just a threshold. Enter a number and experiment. Mine's set around .3 something.

The output of the Binary Op is (essentially) a gate signal. This signal can drive any sequencer using CV:Step/Toggle/etc.***

*I also tried a standard clock signal. Didn't work as well. YMMV.
**This particular technique seems to like very short duty cycles for accurate tracking. When duty cycles approached 50%, the "clock" signal approaches full rectification and the logic breaks down in interesting ways. Gates are held, missed, and latched like a random burst generator. Didn't expect that.
***I haven't found a way to set bpm or generate a Numerology clock signal; only a series of gates. A true clock signal would be superior to take advantage of things like Groove, Rate, Hard Sync, etc. There are ways to recreate that functionality but I imagine a "Seconds per Beat to BPM" unary operator setting the BPM on a GrooveClock would do this in a more scalable way.

I really didn't expect this to be such an interesting path; it was literally a lark to see what would happen. But I've really enjoyed the workflow and it's musical results so far. Numerology just "drops in" and loves playing along. It's also a dead simple way to get a modular + computer sync'd w/o MIDI or a DC-coupled interface. And I swearswear-to-god it sounds tighter... punchier.

here is the missing file

i've made only a little trial with it so i'm not sure if is accurate (i think no ) but as baltimoroder says this tecnique can produce nice sound result.
