Default XY to mix four synths

I would like to be able to use a single XY square to mix
the outputs of four virtual instruments, so that the center
would contain all four, the corners each individual one and
the intermediate positions various balances of them. I have
been able to set up a stack where they adjust in pairs using
a unitary op (negate) to reverse one of the cv signals, but I
am still doing something wrong.
Any guidance would be appreciated!

To set up for X try sending the X cv through:

(i) binary op, float divide with input b set to 2 (this scales the range to between -0.5 and 0.5)
(ii) binary op, add with input b set to 0.5(this adjusts the range to be between 0 and 1. Use cv out from this binary op to control the volume of one of your synths. Also send this cv out to....

(iii) unary op negate (sets the range to 0.0 to -1.0) send this to...
(iv) binary op, add with input b set to 1. The output of this to another of your synths. The range of this op is now 1 to 0 - the opposite of the output to your first synth. This means the X axis is set up to cross fade between two of your four synths.

Repeating this exact set up of modules but feeding the Y cv output should give you close to what you are after.

If the mix of all the synths is too quiet when in the centre you could try adding another stage to create a non linear response to your X-Y pad. A square root unary op could do the trick or one of the logarithmic functions in conjunction with another binary op addition function to adjust the output range.

Thanks for your prompt reply, I'll give that a try!
edit:
That worked! As you indicated I am noticing a volume drop when panning all to
centre. Where would I insert the additional stage and would I need one for both
the X and the Y pad outputs?
Thanks again!

Glad to hear it worked. I think you'll need to add the extra stage four times in total, once just before each of your of four synths. Hopefully the square root unary op will do the trick.

I am actually using the XY to control Volume for each synth in a
Audio Mixer. Would the unary op then be placed before the CV
inputs on the Parameter Mods I have set up to do this?

That's it, insert one unary op before each of your four param mod cv inputs.

Hello Two Soldiers and Rexlapin

I can't get it to work as described, at no point are any of the channels soloed there is always at least 2 voices playing. Also I'm not getting the scaling so the base level is still around 30 on the mixer.

Here is my setup. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Wade,

The scaling is due to the ParamMod auto scaling doing funny things. Turning off auto scaling and inserting a Scale & Offset mod with scaling set to 110 will fix that.

The "at least two voices playing at once" is because I didn't think it through properly. Whoops!! I'll be back shortly

Okay... a completely different and much less elegant approach attached. I'm sure there's a better solution but this seems to be working and the volume faders look pretty when you wiggle the xy pad

Sorry for sending you barking up the wrong tree rexlapin.
